Using this massage tool the proper way to release your lower back muscles may get to some areas we couldn't quite get to with our other approaches. It can be done by itself, but ideally you'll do it in conjunction with all the techniques on the main lower back pain relief page. When used properly, this is a wonderful tool to help you get at some of the deeper muscle groups in the lower back area that affect everything from your back all the way down to your feet.

We'll be focusing on the rope like muscle group (erector spinae muscles) that runs up each side of your spinal column, and we'll also be working on the lower back muscles a little further out to the side (quadratus lumborum) that also attach to the top of your hip bone. Take your time, and you'll do fine.

The most important thing to remember is that you do NOT want to "massage" the tight tissue with the massage tool, since that will be a waste of your time and effort. We will be using the press-hold-move technique with the massage tool, and when done properly you'll love the results.

This short introductory video is a great place to start.

Lower Back Pain Remedy - Massage Tool Release

Here's what we're going to do:

Lower Back Erector Spinae Release -

Take your BackNobber II or your Theracane (or any similar tool) and place one of the knobby ends on the muscles of your lower back that are right next to your vertebrae. Everyone is a little different, but with the BackNobber II that I use in the video I like to place the knob all the way on the opposite side of my spine from the side I'm holding it in front of me. It gives me the most stable positioning on the knob, but feel free to experiment with what works best for you.

Sitting up straight with your spine "in neutral"……meaning your lower back muscles are not having to flex too much and are as relaxed as possible……take the knob of your massage tool and press into the tissue on the side of your low back you'll be working on first.

When you find a tender spot apply firm, but gentle pressure (only as much as you can relax into!) to the spot with the massage tool and do the press-hold-move technique by bending forward and back, making the muscle you are pressing on move under the knob of the massage tool.

Now, simply go up and down both sides of your low back do the press-hold-move technique on any tender spots.

Release L5 Erector Spinae Muscles -

L5, your lowest vertebrae does need a little extra focus. It's easy to miss. Take your fingertips and move down your back feeling the boney spines on your lower back vertebrae. Bend forward and back so you can feel them move a bit. You'll feel one final bump before you run into your tailbone. That's your L5 vertebrae, your lowest vertebrae. Now just move your finger to one side or the other and feel the muscle tissue on either side. If it's tender, keep pressure on the spot with one finger as you guide the knob of the massage tool to press on that spot. Now just do the press-hold-move technique on that spot by bending forward and back. Do both sides if they are both tender.

Top of Hip Release -

You can also take your massage tool and check for any tender spots on the tissue that connects to where your lower back muscles attach to your hip bones. Press into the tissue just above your hip bones in this area and do the press-hold-move technique on any tender spots.

This area can be very tender, so just take your time. It will let go.

Release Remaining Tender Spots -

Now that you've been through your low back area once, we want to go back to any remaining tender spots and do another version of the press-hold-move technique where we add a twist.

Place the knob on a tender spot and bend forward. When you're all the way forward press the knob in just a bit deeper into the tissue so you have a nice firm hold on it. Then come back up to a neutral sitting position. With pressure still firmly on the spot, twist your entire upper body toward the side you are pressing on.

Do this gently and firmly down both sides of your lower back, including your lowest vertebrae, L5
